Motoring is a small category with an unusually consistent character, and its coherence comes from the same property that makes cookery travel: it is demonstrative and largely visual. A car being driven, tested, restored or raced communicates most of what it is communicating without language, which is why motoring formats have historically been among the most widely exported factual programming in television and why a category this small reaches as many countries as it does.

The content divides into three recognisable groups. Motoring magazine and test programming, which is the most exported form and where the best-known titles sit. Motorsport archive, carrying historical racing rather than live competition, since live motorsport rights are sold exclusively and sit behind the same wall as everything else in sport. And restoration and workshop programming, which is closer in kind to lifestyle and behaves accordingly.

Playability is close to the site average. There is little here that anyone has strong reason to fence, since the archive material has no remaining exclusive value and the magazine formats were licensed broadly to begin with, but the licensed catalogue still carries ordinary territorial terms in places.

The country spread is wider than the channel count suggests, with the United States leading and a scattering across Europe behind it. Anyone looking for live racing will not find it here and should read the sport page and its explanation of why, which applies with particular force to motorsport: it is among the most tightly and most expensively fenced content in broadcasting.
